Local Dems Review Judicial Candidates

There was a time, not so long ago, that Cook County Judges were chosen based on clout and connections. While influence and personal networks still play a part in all things related to politics, today, the Democratic Party of the Township Lyons relies on a judicial slating committee to evaluate and recommend candidates for judicial positions.  

During the month of July the Democratic Party of the Township of Lyons’ Judicial Slating Committee convened on Saturday afternoons to meet with and interview nearly two dozen candidates. The slating committee used a data-driven approach and a rubric to evaluate potential judicial candidates. The committee thoroughly reviewed their qualifications, experience, and expertise, ensuring that those endorsed were well-suited for the position.

The Slating Committee was composed of a cross-section of attorneys and community members from across the Township. From Bridgeview, to Lyons, and over to Western Springs, the diverse members of the committee aimed to provide an impartial evaluation of candidates, minimizing political considerations and focusing on legal competence, ethical standards, and a sense of shared values. The ultimate goal was to rigorously vet the judicial candidates’ qualifications and commitment to justice.

The values of the Democratic Party of the Township of Lyons were a cornerstone of the judicial evaluation process. The Township of Lyons is one of the strongest, safest and most vibrant communities in Cook County. While the Democrats of the Township of Lyons are strongly committed to fairness, opportunity, and justice; they also recognize the importance of keeping the Township’s streets and neighborhoods some of the safest in the state. As a result, the Slating Committee sought to support candidates who possessed an understanding of balancing compassionate justice with appropriate accountability.
