Young Democrats Bring Gen Z to Vice Presidential Debate Watch Party!

The Young Democrats of Lyons Township (YDLT) brought their members and newly interested residents out for a nonpartisan Vice Presidential Debate Watch Party hosted at the Township of Lyons by the Clerk’s Office. The Young Democrats spoke with Lyons Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg about getting more young people civically engaged throughout the Township and came up with the family-friendly watch party idea marketed to Generation Z to encourage interest in politics and generate respectful conversation about top issues for young voters.

Clerk Hoffenberg brought two of her daughters, Lyons Township Assessor Patrick Hynes brought his youngest daughter, La Grange Trustee Lou Gale brought his son, and School District 105 Board Member Candace Mares brought her son, giving young Township residents a chance to meet local elected officials, learn how the government can serve them, and discuss generational differences in politics.

President Sean Kirchman of the Young Democrats addressed the crowd saying that the issues disproportionately or uniquely impacting young Americans, including climate change, gun violence, student debt, and the cost of living, were only going to be solved by younger generations organizing, running for office, and taking action to address the issues themselves. “We’re inheriting the climate crisis and will have to live through it, so it’s up to us to organize now to address these immediate threats to our futures.”

Along with other community members, the Summit-based Nubian 9 group focused on registering voters and educating them attended the watch party. The event successfully brought together a diverse group of people interested in supporting youth civic engagement, a stepping stone for bridging the generational gap in voting.
The VP debate itself proved to be a major shift towards civility and policy compared to the previous Presidential debates, and the Gen Z attendees discussed their thoughts on the candidates and policies throughout the event. The Young Democrats of Lyons Township thank all of our supporters for attending, and we look forward to hosting events for youth civic engagement in the future!
