Mariyana Spyropoulos, a dedicated public servant and advocate for her community, has long been involved in the civic life of the Chicago area. Born to immigrant parents, Mariyana grew up on the South Side of Chicago and attended Chicago Public Schools, where she developed an early passion for civics and public service. Her commitment to bettering her community, shaped by her upbringing, has been evident throughout her career. In 2010, Mariyana was elected to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) Board of Commissioners. Her leadership qualities were quickly recognized, and she served as Board President from 2015 to 2019.
Beyond her work at MWRD, Mariyana has remained committed to serving the Township of Lyons and surrounding communities. Her ongoing involvement reflects a deep-rooted dedication to local causes, especially those that promote education, sports, and community engagement. Recently, she lent her support to the Lyons Township girls flag football team, the only team currently representing the township in the sport. The team’s participation in the Illinois High School Association’s (IHSA) first year of sanctioned girls flag football is a historic achievement, and Mariyana’s advocacy has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of equal opportunities for girls in sports. By backing this historic first year of IHSA-sanctioned girls flag football, Mariyana continues to contribute to the vibrancy and inclusivity of the Township of Lyons.
Throughout her career, Mariyana Spyropoulos has remained a tireless advocate for progress, whether through environmental protection, community service, or the advancement of youth sports. Her leadership and dedication have not only benefited the Township of Lyons but also set an example for future generations of civic-minded individuals.
